Overview of the Article

This article will be discussing the pros and cons of both new games and old school games, it will specifically be focusing on computer games but any type of games will fit the article. Once having read this article i would like a minute of your time to rate weather you find new games or old school games better. Although it might seem that the answer is simple it really is not. Ill try to be as unbiased as possible to give you the most accurate sides of both new games and old school games.

New Games

Remember this is focused on computer games not other games but can apply for other games. New games like Starcraft 2, Leauge of Legends and Guild Wars 2 are rated by users and games sites as really good games. This is very true but one question is needed to be asked and that is, are these new games better then old school games? Well from this article you will see the pros and cons of each and you can be the judge on this.

New games have tons of new innovations that make it better like their graphics, story lines and more features. However with pros comes cons and those are their complexity, perfection and requirements.

Advantages of New Games:

Graphics: With new games graphics are becoming much more detailed which is giving it a more real life feeling. This feeling gives some games more reason for playing the games they do.

Story Lines: With new games, story lines (for games that have one) have become more advanced giving gamers more reason and goals when playing games.

Features: Games now a days have much more features like replays, sounds/graphic changes, mission selects and many more. These features make the game more enjoyable and more suitable for users as they can be customized by the user.

Disadvantages of New Games:

Complexity: New games in this decade have a lot of commands, tons of features, and require a lot of actions per minute to be a good player. This makes it very uncomfortable to enjoy.

Perfection: This may seem like a advantage but sometimes perfection is not the greatest. With perfection games get boring as hidden things can never be found unlike in old school games through glitches.

Requirements: New games require really good computers that many players dont have and can't. Thus, the reason is obvious on why this is a disadvantage, bad computer = laggy/no play.

Old School Games

Old school games like Starcraft 1 and Age of Empires 1+2 might be very very old but they certainly are not bad games or even boring games. These games are still being played till today and have a very big user database showing that they are still in the loop even today.

These games stay in this loop because of many reason including there simplicity, defects (glitches) and the old school vibe. However, these games do have people that do not like them because of the lack in their graphics, features and inconsistansy (unbalanced).

Advantages of Old School Games:

Simplicity: Old school games primary is liked for it simplicity. For example in StarCraft 1, there was only a few units that could be built and there was little spells that could be used which made the game less micro intensive and more macro intensive. Some people might argue this is not good but for some this is perfect.

Defects (Glitches): You may think that this is a disadvantage but I and many others will tell you this is amazing. Shown on Angry Video Game Nerd, glitches sometimes make the game very interesting to play and it also makes players want to find out new things.

Old School Vibe: This is the most important part and probably the reason many people do enjoy the old school games so much. Old games just give you a feeling that you can't EVER get from new games. This feeling is impossible to describe but if you have ever played old school games you know exactly what i am talking about.

Disadvantages of Old School Games:

Graphics: This is technically an advantage and disadvantage because of the fact that many players like worse graphics and some like amazing graphics. Amazing graphics are great but require an amazing computer and sometimes hurt your head and the same goes the other way except that you don't need an amazing computer.

Features: In old school games, there are not many options especially in the really really old games. Some games did not even have a pause button which might seem crazy but its true. Not having these features affects some players cause it limits them on what they are able to do and many don't like that.

Inconsistency (unbalanced): Some might say this is great it does have drawbacks as well. Many players don't like inconsistency like unbalanced issue cause they feel it ruins the game play. However some do like this because it creates a challenge which many players like.

As much as new games are cool and all some of the older games just have what newer ones can't capture I notice this even in the world of MMORPG's. While ive tried many new games I still find my heart is with ragnarok an old game that came out 9 years ago it just has all the things you can't find in newer games. I would trade graphics anyday for those things.

I think this article is way too broad. I'd love to see an article series, where you compare the difference between the old and the new, but do so in a very specific way.

Focus on genre, or even a specific franchise. You can talk about camera angles, playstyles, graphics engines, and so on.

For instance: Side scrolling is essentially dead, top down puzzle/action that thrived on the NES and SNES is virtually dead.

Cool idea, but the article was too broad for me to really get interested in.

I personally like the new games better. Although I do not play a lot of computer games, Graphics are very important to me. If the game loses my interest but is pretty to look at I sometimes get over the lack of interest. Also I like the complexity of the newer games because I do not need to be a good player, but it allows me room to grow. If I perfect the game in a week I do not like to take the time to play it. In fact my boyfriend has played starcraft 1 since it came out, but it wasn't until the second one came out that I even got interested in it because it looked so much cooler! And now that I have been playing it for a while I keep finding things I still need to figure out better. I enjoy that challenge.
